Tame Impala ā aka Kevin Parker ā brings the listeners on a psychedelic, electronic trip throughout the course of third LP, Currents.
Australian alternative band, Tame Impala return with its third album, Currents. Highly anticipated, Tame Impala ā aka Kevin Parkerās brainchild ā was nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album for 2012ās Lonerism. Following up a Grammy-nominated affair isnāt easy, so how does Currents stack up? Well, hereās a track-by-track take for your reading pleasure!
āLet It Happenā
On opener āLet It Happen,ā Kevin Parkerās vocals seem to float atop the production effortlessly. Throughout the first portion of the song, thereās a cool, yet propelling energy that eventually percolates into an intense middle section. Lengthy at shy of eight minutes, āLet It Happenā is epic and worth the duration. This sets the tone.
āNangsā is the total opposite, lasting under two minutes. There is one simple, constantly reiterated lyric: āBut is there something more than that?ā The best way to describe the record is that itās lush and druggy in sound. The druggy part seems no coincidence; ānangsā refers to cans of nitrous oxide, used as drugs for a hallucinogenic high. So is it the perfect soundtrack? ā Definitely!
āThe Momentā follows, speeding up the tempo. Despite the exuberance established by tempo, the mood isnāt jubilant, but rather introspective. Parker seems to questionĀ the value and worth of a lifetimeĀ or at least a specific āmomentā within life. This introspection is evidenced from the start: āIn the end, itās stronger than I know how to be / and I canāt just spend my whole lifetime wondering.ā
āYes Iām Changingā
āThey say people never change, but thatās bullshit, they do.ā Apparently, as Parker tells it on āYes Iām Changing,ā heās growing and progressing as a person. While this is as reflective as āThe Moment,ā the difference is thereās (1) a relationship component, (2) a slower pace, and (3) a major key and indisputable exuberance by Parker.
āThereās a world, out there, and itās calling my name And itās calling yours, girl itās calling yours too.ā
āEventuallyā depicts the end of a relationship ā āIf only there could be another way to do this / cause it feels like murder to put your heart through this.ā Moderately slow and once more in a major key, Parkerās happiness seemingly comes from acceptance this is whatās best for the both of them, not that he has no use or holds disdain. Ultimately, āEventuallyā is another standout within Currents.
Following instrumental āGossip,ā āThe Less I Know The Betterā delivers a groove that would easily be at home on the dance floor in the 70s. āThe Less I Know The Betterā isnāt a dance cut, but itās groovy, carefree, and feel good. The narrative is simple ā guy sees his ex in all her beauty, sees she has a new guy (āTrevorā), and the emotions of the past come flooding back. This triggers āFrom A Past Life,ā where Parker takes a step back, contrasting the forwardness of āYes Iām Changingā or āEventually.ā Musically, whatās most interesting about the record is the heavy use of vocal effects, particularly pitch shift on the spoken word verses.
āāCause Iām A Manā
Interlude āDisciplesā continues to relive the past, as does āāCause Iām A Manā where Parker is:
āLost in the moment for the second time Each fucking doubt I make, unleash a cry.ā
Another slower, introspective record, Parkerās answers to his state of mind authentically, yet quite simplistically: heās a man who makes mistakes, even if he possesses better judgment than he always shows.
āReality In Motionā proves true to its title, as things seem to ācome to a headā following a push and pull throughout Currents between the past and the future. Parker has trouble committing to a direction, which makes āRealityā scattered (positively): āPut your arms around me, I can sense you doubt me / you donāt need to promise / that only leads to heartache, closer to an earthquakeā¦ā
Penultimate song āLove/Paranoidā contrasts āReality In Motionā pronouncedly in sound. It marks something of a conflicted new direction, as the paranoia referenced within the title is clearly expressed.Ā Ā āAnd suddenly Iām the phony one / the only one with a problem,ā Parker sings on the third verse. āTrue love is bringing it out of me / the worst in me, and I know now.ā The title of closer āNew Person, Same Old Mistakesā says it all: āTwo sides of me canāt agree.ā While Parker has āchangedā for the better, he still admits his flaws, which are the same old pitfalls.
Final Thoughts
How does Tame Impalaās third album Currents fare? Probably depends on who you are. If you are a naĆÆve newbie to the Australian bandās previous two albums, Currents will likely get a more favorable view. Being a newbie who wanted a slice of the Tame Impala pie, listening to Currents tickled my fancy. However, those who have long lost their Tame Impala virginity may not be crazy about the new direction. Likely, this album lies somewhere in the middle of two extremes.
